How does the treatment work?
The surgeon makes an incision near the area of implantation, forms a pocket under the skin, inserts the implant and closes the incision with sutures.

Yes, but with all surgeries there are some risks. There is a small chance of infection and the chance is slightly higher if an incision is made inside the mouth. There is a risk of the implant moving or shifting out of alignment. Also, blood clots could occur or the body could reject the implant resulting in necessary removal.

There may be some bruising, swelling, bleeding, discomfort or itching. These side effects are temporary.

What can I expect after surgery?
When the surgery is completed, bandages will be applied and kept on for a couple of days. There will be some tenderness and your physician will prescribe medications for pain and antibiotics to help prevent infection. After about six weeks, most of the swelling will have disappeared.

Instructions before treatment
The patients’s individual surgeon will provide specific instructions prior to surgery. There will be guidelines on eating, drinking, smoking and medications to take and avoid. Patients should make arrangements for someone to drive them home after the surgery.
Instructions for after surgery
Patients are required to wear bandages for the first few days and some bruising and swelling should be expected. Pain medications are prescribed. Some numbness and soreness may last for up to three months.
